In this 3-day workshop, the initial focus is on making large vessels on the potter’s wheel. The final day is devoted to creating colourful surface patterns using slip.
Workshop programme
Most of us reach a plateau in throwing on the wheel, where we just can't seem to increase the height of a cylinder, no matter how much extra clay we use.
In this workshop we shall start with an amount of clay which you are comfortable to throw with. You will learn several techniques (some of which will feel very new) which will help you throw taller, with thinner walls.
We’ll go through the essential principles of throwing which add up to a greatly increased confidence in throwing taller and larger. We’ll apply the same principles to bowl shapes.
You will gradually increase the amount of clay you can throw with.
On the third day of the workshop, we shall turn our attention to the surface of the vessels we made on day 2. I’ll show you how to develop a surface design based on abstract writing techniques, which will be unique to you.
We’ll look at several techniques for applying these designs to the surface, using coloured slip, giving you lots of ideas and principles for developing your work in the future.

The class is held in English.
This class is not suited for beginners.
We will throw with stoneware.
An optional bisque firing service is offered. Bisque fired vessels will be ready for pick-up approx. 3 weeks after the workshop. However we are unable to ship any ceramics.
We are a fully equipped pottery studio. However, we do recommend that you bring your own favourite tools with you.
The daily schedule will be from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm with a one-hour lunch break.
Soft drinks, coffee, tea, snacks, and a vegetarian lunch are included.
Tom Kemp
Tom Kemp is renowned for his beautiful, large, hand-thrown porcelain vessels, which he decorates in such an iconic way using his unique calligraphic style.
He lives in Devon, UK and we are very delighted that he is coming over to Berlin to share his knowledge with us.
